Quercus velutina (Sugar Maple)
Circumference (inches): 146
Height (Feet): 89
Spread (Feet): 56
Address: Just Southeast of Wave Hill House
About: The sugar maple at Wave Hill is located south of the Shade Border and west of the Aquatic Garden. The exact age of the tree is unknown; it may have been planted by the estate owners or could have been a wild sapling that grew naturally. Wave Hill estimates that this tree started growing sometime in the early to mid-1800s, making it close to 200 years old. Its bark exhibits the characteristic plates of old sugar maples. A bench sits underneath this tall tree, offering a lovely view of the surrounding specimens and Wave Hill House. This tree has lost numerous limbs over the years, giving it a slender appearance.
